An Adventure Into Farming
Today I am going to tell you all about the arrival of my new pal Purple Reign to Hilltop Farm.
Well where do I start, Purple Reign or PR as we call him is one very handsome, cool dude. He is a light rose grey suri and really stands out in the field. All the girls were gobsmacked when they saw him and started running around the fields showing off.
When he first arrived he was a little nervous but that's just normal and it didn't take him long to settle in. I had a really good chat with him and told him that they're not a bad lot here, the humans I mean.
PR was put in the field with myself and the other pet boys, Greenday, Hawkins & Idaho. My owners didn't want to put him in the with the other studs in case they might get a bit jealous of him and fight over who was the best looking and who fancied what girl and all that love stuff that I don't bother about.
We all got on so well that PR is still in the field with us now.
I started to look up to PR. I think because I looked out for him when he came first, now he was now looking out for me. He is definitely a good influence on me because after three and a half years' I finally decided to eat the Alpaca pellets that my owners feed the others. I never wanted them or liked the look of them, but PR told me I didn't know what I was missing and they were the reason he was so strong and good-looking.
Well, that was enough to convince me so I started eating them that day and I haven't stopped since. I love them and look forward to feeding time.
PR and I are quite similar in ways. We both like our own company at times. Sometimes when we are in the back fields I look around and can't see him so I go for a little walk into the front fields and he will be either in the shelter eating hay or sitting in his favourite spot under the ditch looking across at the girls.
Then sometimes I go off on my own and sit at the fence halfway down the front field watching and listening to everything that's going on. I am very nosey.......just ask my owners.
PR is a very clever guy you know. He can fool my owners... well the woman anyway. If he hears her in the shed where the food is kept he will fly down the field and stand at the fence looking across at her. Every time she falls for it and goes over with a small handful of food and gives it to him. He then goes off all delighted with himself.
Since the day I was born I have never left the farm. PR has left it a few times this summer to go on dates. Oh lord, the girls are crazy about him. Not only the ones here but he has been travelling around Ireland too. He comes back with a spring in his step but I close my ears when he starts talking about it. His dates are finished now until next year when I'm sure the girls will be queuing up for him again.
We are all so delighted that Purple Reign is living here with us and he seems to be happy here too. Sometimes we all think our owners are a bit bonkers but we know they love us very much.
My owners were updating their website and they said “ Fargo, snap to it, you haven’t updated your page is ages” , so here I am, and I am going to tell you all about our lives on Hilltop Farm.
I am now over 4 years of age, and it sure has been a busy few years. There are a lot of new alpacas here now.
2022 saw the arrival of Samba and her little girl Harmony. Harmony stayed with her mum a lot but sometimes she did hang around with Harper, Haribo & Hawkins who were the same age as her. She is gorgeous and very cute. She is still with Harper & Haribo but when Hawkins was old enough, he joined us big boys.
Last year a new breed of Alpacas joined the farm. They are called Suri’s. When the first one arrived, I didn’t know what to think of her. She looked so different and is called Angelique. She didn’t look like anything I had seen before, I thought she either needed a proper haircut or some magic shampoo to make her fleece look like the rest of us. Then a few months later another one arrived. Holy Moly her fleece was even longer, it looked like dreadlocks. Her name was Carly. When all of us got our annual shearing that year my owners didn’t shear Carly. Suri’s can be left for two years so they decided to leave her because they wanted to see what her fleece would be like. I thought the whole place had gone mad but I have to say Suri’s are really cool.
Three other girls arrived here too. God they were all gorgeous, I couldn’t keep my eyes off them. Mandalorian, Dandelion & Divine Intervention are their names. There was great excitement for all of them but especially Divine as she was the first Appaloosa to join us. I didn’t know what an appaloosa was until I was told. She is white with lots of spots. A real looker but my dad Bronson had his eye on her so I missed the boat there.
Last summer also saw the arrival of three young cria, Indigo, Idaho & Independence. They were funny little characters. Idaho has now joined us big boys He is a good kid, a little shy at first but myself and one of the others had a chat with him, man to man and he has settled in very well now.
Sadly, the end of last summer Samba got very, very sick. No one could figure out what was wrong with her. She spent 3 weeks in hospital and seemed to be worse what she came home. My owners, along with our vets, other expert alpaca breeders and a vet in the UK called Sarah, did absolutely every thing they possible could to treat her but nothing was making her better. She just got worse and worse and eventually at the end of October last year she passed away. It was very very sad. I felt very sorry for Harmony because I know what it is like to lose your mum. We eventually found out it was Cancer that Samba had, so there was nothing that could have been done to make her better. Now she was out of pain. Harmony is doing well and such a funny little girl.
Just before Samba passed away, a cool new dude arrived but we didn’t get to celebrate it for a week or two. When I say cool, I mean REALLY cool…...and get this….he is also a Suri. His name is Purple Reign. All the girl’s jaws dropped when they saw him because he is so good looking, I will tell you all about him and the other new arrivals on my next update.
